Alpha Theta Sigma

ALPHA THETA SIGMA,

commonly known as AthetaS, is an inter-collegiate service fraternity & sorority established at the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University in General Santos City, Philippines, last September 11, 2008 by Andrei Linus Villarruz, John Paul Villarruz & Ronald Allan Villarruz to develop leadership, promote friendship and render service to humanity. The members of AthetaS are known as Phoenixes. The founders wished to create an organization that brought together the community rather than set them apart because of who they are. They believed that each potential member brings with them a sense of individualism and should be judged by his own merits without regard of religion and sexual preferences. They created this organization with the hope that young men and young women could bond together for the betterment of the community and the Organization itself. The purpose of Alpha Theta Sigma is to transform an individual through cooperation, culture, patience, brotherhood/sisterhood and exposure to leading figures. Using these things, a true Phoenix may be able to lead the Organization into great heights and others into a more profound world.

General Purposes:

  • To bring together college students and leaders to encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
  • To unite the members in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.
  • To encourage service-minded people (provide humanitarian service) to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors.

Main Obligations:

Obligations are those elements of initiation rites, service and rituals in which a neophyte swears to abide by the rules of Alpha Theta Sigma and to keep the secrets of the fraternity/sorority, which are the various signs, tokens and words associated with recognition in each degree, as well as to perform certain duties and to avoid doing those things which are prohibited by his Obligation. In regular jurisdictions these obligations are sworn in front of the bonafide members and in the witness of God/Allah and often with assurance that it is of the neophyte's own free will.

Symbols:

  • Two-Headed Phoenix (Primary Symbol)- The phoenix has proved an enduring allegorical symbol, symbolizing immortality or uniqueness and often appears in modern popular culture. The two heads symbolize unity and equality towards the brotherhood & sisterhood that Alpha Theta Sigma promotes.
  • Torch- A common emblem of both enlightenment and hope. It symbolizes life, truth and the regenerative power of flame.
  • Laurel Wreath- The symbol of victory. It was regarded as a purifying plant with powers of immortality. This wreath came to be regarded as a sign of divine blessing

The goal of this activity was to forge brotherhood & sisterhood, camaraderie and solidarity among the organizations and its members.
