Alisson Gothz is a performance artist, visual artist, photographer, model and nightclub celebrity, based in Sao Paulo. Early life Alisson Gothz was born in Syrtis Major Planum, a "dark spot" located in the boundary between the northern lowlands and southern highlands of Mars. He descended to Earth around 1976, to become a walking piece of Art and to rescue the world from the dark hands of boredom. Since late 90’s, he's been transforming himself into several different characters, using his face and body as the main subject of more than 1,000 self-portraits, each one completely different from the other. What started as just pure “dressing up fantasies” to go out clubbing in cities like Sao Paulo, London and Berlin, suddenly became “Art” - and ended up in the galleries. Artwork Being a cross-media artist, Gothz travels through the worlds of photography, performance art, visual arts and fashion, creating very colourful, freaky and whimsical self-portraits. Artist Statement "Since late 90’s, I've been transforming myself into several different characters, using my face and body as the main subject of more than 1,000 self-portraits, each one completely different from the other. My influences are extremely wide, travelling through the worlds of surrealism and pop art. I believe in the Hindu philosophy which says that body and soul are two different things - whilst the body changes from one life to the other, the soul remains the same. I try to use my body as a vehicle for my artwork, changing itself in every portrait, while my soul continues being the same. The confusion of the genders and sexuality are also a big part of the aesthetic of my portraits, in which I try always to be a neutral character - so people can figure out by themselves who or what am I. Yes, I do like to confuse people. Everything is done by myself, with almost no money or fancy technology involved. From the choice of subject to the make-up process, from the choice of location until the final digital retouchings, everything is a hard (but fun) labour of love. The characters who live inside the Planet Gothz are whimsical, funny, sometimes scary living creatures. Everybody is invited to visit this planet - as long (and that's mandatory) they have a good sense of humour!" - Alisson Gothz, December 2009 Selected Works Influences Sparkles of the influences of surrealist genious Salvador Dali and pop artist Andy Warhol can be seen in his choice of themes and exquisite use of colours. Pop music also makes a huge influence in his work, having been practically born on Earth to the sound of David Bowie’s “Berlin Trilogy” (Low, “Heroes” and Lodger) and Kraftwerk’s “Trans Europe Express”. Nina Hagen, Grace Jones, Klaus Nomi, Boy George and, of course, all those lovely New Romantics creatures from the 80’s and colourful Club Kids from the 90’s are also channeled in each and every one of his outlandish characters, specially Australian freak-genious Leigh Bowery - Gothz is also the creator of Bowery's first and biggest tribute website on the Web, the highly acclaimed Leigh Bowery Xtravaganza.
