Alan Bass

Alan Bass (born April 24, 1990) is a hockey writer and author of the book "The Great Expansion: The Ultimate Risk That Changed the NHL Forever." Having been writing since 2008, his senior year of high school, Bass attended Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy and is currently a junior at Muhlenberg College, a liberal arts college in Allentown, PA. He is studying psychology and business. He has done numerous semesters of psychological research on the effects of music on emotions. He has presented twice at the Association for Psychological Science convention, in Boston, MA and Washington, DC. He has written for Inside Hockey, ProHockeyNews, and Hockey54.com. He currently writes for The Hockey News, contributing on prospects and writing articles on NHL alumni. He is also a former intern for the Philadelphia Flyers NHL hockey team, working in the Community Relations and Fan Development departments.
Background
Bass was born in Cherry Hill, New Jersey to his parents, Michael and Debbi Bass, a conservative Jewish family. Bass's paternal grandparents escaped Europe before the Holocaust in the 1930s, while his maternal grandparents were born in the United States. His father is the owner and president of Stevens International, a wholesaler of plastic, metal and wood kits such as rockets, trains, die cast collectibles, science kits, books and tools. His mother is a salesman for Stevens International and the owner of her own travel agency, Hooked on Travel.
Bass attended and graduated high school from Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy, participating in numerous theater productions, including Seussical, Mame, Oklahoma and After applying to several colleges, he decided to attend Muhlenberg College, in the Class of 2012. There he joined the Muhlenberg Mules' Division II college hockey team. After playing nine games in his Freshman year, he was named the team's President and General Manager, where he currently serves. In his freshman year, the team reached the championship game, losing to the University of Scranton in overtime. Bass also serves as the secretary of the Great Northeast Collegiate Hockey Conference.
Writing career
Bass began his journalism career in 2008, when he started writing for Bleacher Report, a sports blog website. He first started covering hockey when he attended Philadelphia Flyers' rookie camp in the 2008 summer. Since then, he branched out writing for numerous outlets, including Inside Hockey, ProHockeyNews.com, and Hockey54.com. He continued covering the Philadelphia Flyers through training camps and regular seasons/playoffs, until he was hired by The Hockey News as an intern after his freshman year of college. While there, he covered the 2009 NHL Scouting Combine and much of the 2009 NHL Draft. He continued writing for The Hockey News when he returned to school in the fall, eventually attending the 2010 Stanley Cup Final between the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers, helping to cover the event for the famous news outlet. In 2011, Bass began writing draft prospect previews for the National Hockey League. His writing has led to more information about draft-eligible NHL prospects, prospects in the minor professional leagues, and, with his published book, on the history of the game.
In March 2010, Bass began research for his book on 1967 NHL Expansion, entitled The Great Expansion: The Ultimate Risk That Changed the NHL Forever. After spending the majority of each day researching, interviewing, and writing, the book was completed in September 2010. He spent numerous months editing the book, before submitting it for publication in early 2011 to iUniverse, a self-publishing company owned by Barnes and Noble.
Hockey career
Bass's freshman year of college, he played nine games for the Muhlenberg Mules Division II hockey team (members of the ACHA) and helped the coaching staff through the team's playoff run to the GNCHC Championship game. His sophomore year, his role was heightened with his ascent to President/General Manager. In his junior year, the team finished their season with a 14-1-1 record, finishing in first place in the league for the first time in team history. Under Bass's leadership, the team has never missed the playoffs and continues to challenge for the championship every year.
In 2009, Bass was named the secretary of the Great Northeast Collegiate Hockey Conference. He continues to serve in this position.
