Akinyemi Laleye is a Nigerian professional boxer. He competes in the cruiserweight division and boxes out of the United States. He was a contestant on the 4th season of the boxing reality show The Contender.
Professional Boxing Career
Laleye made his professional boxing debut in June 2005 with a 1st round stoppage of Howard Gatch at the St. Petersburg Coliseum in Florida. Over the year he made good progress winning 5 fights in a row before losing to Carlos Raul Ibarra in March 2007. Laleye rebounded from his first career defeat to win his next four bouts establishing a professional record of 10-1.
Contender
In late 2008, Laleye went to Singapore and joined the cast of the 4th series of the boxing reality show, The Contender and became a member of the gold team. On 17 December 2008 he boxed his first round contest against the blue team's Erick Vega and won a unanimous decision over 5 rounds. On 4 February 2009 Lalaye boxed a quarter final contest against Puerto Rican Alfredo Escalera Jr. and won by stoppage in the fifth round sending him through to a semi-final contest against tournament favourite Troy Ross, a fight he would go on to lose over 5 rounds. The loss meant that Laleye went to the season finale at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut on 25 February 2009 fighting for third place. The fight against Rico Hoye ended in disappointment, however, as he lost a decision over eight rounds.
