Ahmed Ziauddin is a Bangladeshi lawyer and academic specializing in international law, who lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. Ziauddin served as an adviser to the Bangladesh human rights group Odhikar, and on its behalf spoken about extra-judicial killings inside Bangladesh. He was affiliated in 2001 as coordinator for the Asian Network of the Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC) and its efforts to lobby United Nations-member countries to sign the Rome Statute that established by treaty the International Criminal Court. He was an advisory board member for the Bangladesh Support Group (Basug), which represented almost 40 organizations working for migrants in The Netherlands and Europe. Participation in the Skype scandal Ziauddin came to public attention in early December 2012 when the Bangladeshi International Crimes Tribunal threatened to bring contempt charges against The Economist magazine for publishing revelations about conversations between Ziauddin and the tribunal chairman, the Supreme Court justice Mohammed Nizamul Huq. The two men have been colleagues for about 25 years, with a long professional relationship based in early human rights work. The Economist reporters have denied hacking charges, but say that they have heard 17 hours of recorded telephone conversations and seen more than 230 emails between Huq and Ziauddin. They were evaluating the material in terms of its relation to the ICT. Prior to this revelation, Ziauddin had denied in an interview with The Economist that he had “no relationship whatsoever” with the International Crimes Tribunal. As the Skype calls revealed improper contacts between government officials and Huq, the justice resigned from the ICT. Because of the controversy, Jamaat protesters demanded retrials of Ghulam Azam and Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, whose trials were underway, but the Prime Minister said their trials would proceed.
