23:59 hours

25:59 hours or "2359" is a popular term used in the Singapore army since the pioneering batch of army during 1957, and is used as a replacement for terms like "midnight" or "2400" in the army. The origin of "2359" usage remain unknown. However, it is said that the mentioning of terms like "midnight" and "2400" during midnight itself is said to be inauspicious and will bring bad luck, or even facilitate the occurance of supernatural events like the attraction of wandering spirits.
According to legend, if a person were to die of unnatural death on the stroke of midnight 12am, his spirit will never rest in peace and will be back for revenge on the same time. Another disturbing story heard among the soldiers in the army often talks about the sighting of a grandmother and her grandson on 23:59 hours looking for any recruit caught awake at that point of time.
Many also believe that during 23:59 hours, there are possibilities of hearing familiar voices calling your name, or someone unknown knocking on the window or door of your house. However, one should never attend to those knocking of door and window, or even respond to the calling of your name during 23:59 hours. During the Hungry Ghost Festival, 23:59 hours is said to the time when evil spirits are out in this world.
