Rumours and demo
In the June 2009 edition of the Finnish magazine Soundi, band leader, keyboardist and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen stated he had started working on a new Nightwish album, leading to much speculation; in October 2009, rumors about the new album's name were going around with the title Wind Embraced, but Olzon listed the rumors as "not true" and said that the songs for the new album had not yet been completed apart from 3 songs written before May 2009. More information was slipped in a later interview, in which Holopainen said "there is going to be a big twist so to say, on the next album", and calling it a dream he has had since the beginning of Nightwish finally coming true. In an interview with Uilleann pipist Troy Donockley, who recorded with the band on several songs
on Dark Passion Play, he was asked about his involvement in the new album and stated "Oh yes, I will be playing on the next album and from what Tuomas has told me, it is going to be something extraordinary..."
On February 1, 2010, Olzon stated on her blog that Holopainen had nine songs ready for the new album. She also stated that the band will be meeting in the summer to make a demo, and fans should not expect anything any earlier than fall of 2011. On Nightmail in April 2010, Holopainen revealed that he has now finished writing songs for the album, and on June 2, it was announced that Holopainen has finished recording the pre-production demo for the upcoming album, slated for a September 2011 release.
Summer Camp 2010
In mid-July of 2010, the band started a rehearsal diary called "Summer Camp 2010" on the band's website, stating that the band (except for Anette Olzon) has gathered to rehearse songs in the Finnish village of Sävi, and that twelve songs are finished, though some lyrics are still not entirely clear. He also announced that they will begin studio sessions on October 15, 2010 In the diary's second entry, five new songs were discussed, two of which were written by guitarist Emppu Vuorinen and bassist Marco Hietala respectively.
Track Listing
So far, the album is known to include at least twelve songs, five of which are somewhat known:
* One song is called a classic Nightwish song, with "one of the best choruses we`ve ever had and a classic Nightwishy c-part of heavy guitars, a massive string riff and everything louder than anything and everybody playing with full force at the same time" according to Holopainen.
* One song is called a "twisted marriage of Van Halen, Pantera and madhouse vocals", with a Pulp Fiction-like bridge.
* One song (written by Emppu Vuorinen) is a "complete one acoustic piece A nice journey back to the roots! Sounds like a Moomin Valley - Christmas carol."
* One song, called "a funeral march", is the big surprise of the album, with elements from bands such as Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride.
* One song (written by Marco Hietala) is a "wonderfully catchy track with the chorus repeated 5 times", and acoustic elements.
