2008 Democratic National Convention protests activity

Like the 2008 Republican National Convention, the Democrats will have protesters when they have their convention to nominate Senator Barack Obama of Illinois as their official Presidential Candidate of the Democratic Party on Monday August 25 - Thursday August 28 at the Pepsi Center and INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado.

While the convention hasn't happened yet, there have been some protest of the Democratic Party and some of their members for failing to withdrawal U.S. Troops out of Iraq (including a campaign to replace Speaker of the House and Representative of the 8th Congressional District of California, Nancy Pelosi with Cindy Sheehan (the mother of the late Army Soldier, Casey Sheehan) as a third party candidate and not having Senator Hillary Clinton of New York as the Presumptive Nominee for the democratic party.

===World Can't Wait: A Pole of Resistance--"Moral Clarity and Fearless Truth-telling"===
The political organization "The World Can't Wait! Drive Out the Bush Regime!" has announced that it is uniting with other opposition groups and individuals from across the country to "plant a pole of resistance in Denver" that can bring clarity to the political situation today and, as World Can't Wait argues, show that the politics of Bush are largely being taken up by Obama and the Democrats. A call to action issued in June of 2008 extends an invitation to people living in the U.S.: "If you think no government should be allowed to do what the Bush regime has done the past 7 years, come to Denver and join others building a movement to that end."

World Can't Wait is mobilizing protest in opposition to the the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, threats of war with Iran, legalized torture, warrantless spying, denial of women's reproductive rights, and attacks on immigrants. In a piece on their website, World Can't Wait states, "We believe that people of conscience must take responsibility for what their own governments do. Thus we call on all people living in the United States to RESIST the trajectory of wars and repression that has been loosed on the world by the Bush administration and a complicit Congress." The statment, entitled "A Country At Peace With Being At War is A Country of Good Germans" continues, "LET IT BE SAID in DENVER so that, on August 24, the eve of the Democratic Convention, there is the largest anti war demonstration that city has seen. Come to Denver for a week of protest that includes marching to stand with immigrants under assault and counter-protests to the week of anti-abortion actions of the Christian Right."

Lawsuit by protesters
The American Civil Liberties Union, on behalf of itself, several anti-war and other organizations, has filed a lawsuit requesting that the Secret Service and Denver officials release information regarding security arrangements at the convention. In a June 12 release, a parade route and Demonstration Zone were announced. The Demonstration Zone will be in Parking Lot A of the Pepsi Center. Some groups, including two groups opposing abortion chose to delay filing suit after it was announced that their applications for permits are being processed.
Authorities revealed on June 30, 2008, that chicken wire or chain link fence will surround the protest area, similar to the 2004 Boston convention. In an amended complaint, the ACLU and interested advocacy groups have filed suit against the Secret Service and the city and county of Denver, questioning the constitutionality of the restrictions. The second phase of the lawsuit is set for July 29.
