1 billion hungry campaign

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization is an intergovernmental body charged with advocating for the hungry and helping poor countries develop their food and agriculture sectors.
With soaring world food prices in 2007-2008, the Organization reported new hunger figures early in 2009 that 1.02 billion people in the world are now undernourished.

FAO’s governing Council in June 2009 approved the holding of a World Summit on Food Security on 16-18 November to address the increase in the number of hungry. As part of a campaign to push governments to dedicate the necessary funding and priority to food and agriculture, FAO launched a petition and called for a fast against hunger prior to the Summit.
The Organization announced prior to the Summit that countries such as Brazil, Nigeria and Viet Nam were reducing hunger by encouraging small farmers and the rural sector.
Support from Goodwill Ambassador
The FAO Goodwill Ambassador program includes Carl Lewis, Fanny Lu, Pierre Cardin and others. They have indicated they will support the 1 billion hungry campaign and urge others to sign the petition at http://www.1billionhungry.org.
