World Universities Peace Invitational Debate

The World Universities Peace Invitational Debate (WUPID) is an annual debating tournament held in Malaysia, using the World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) debate format. Each year, the top thirty (30) debating institutions based on the rankings designed and published in the World Debating Website (http://worlddebating.blogspot.com) are invited to take part.

Objectives

The objective of the tournament is to have the best university debaters to discuss and argue peace related issues and formulate possible conflict resolutions during their debating sessions. The organizers hope, that debating activities like this would be able to foster respect, tolerance and most importantly, togetherness in a world which despite all the technological advancements, very much worlds apart. According to the organisers, it is the fear and apprehension of our differences - ideological and cultural - that motivate people to exhibit certain behaviour, which May Be considered belligerent. After taking part in WUPID, the organisers hope that the world’s future leaders and policymakers would be more broadminded and forbearing to the diversity of cultures and ideologies which are in contrast and dissimilar to theirs. In the long run, the organisers hope that WUPID would later be a preferred youth platform for the discussion and debate of proposed international policies.

As a debate tournament, WUPID promises the highest quality debating. Not just after the preliminary rounds, but from the very beginning. Other than the fact, that WUPID arguably invites the top 30 debating institutions in the world, it also boasts of having the best adjudication panel in any tournament. Unlike many tournaments, which the selection of the adjudication panel is rested on regional representation, WUPID invites the best adjudicators from around the globe. Hence, WUPID prides itself in guaranteeing participation from top debating institutions and also top quality judging, top quality motions and top quality tabbing.

Champion: Monash University (Victor Finkel and Amit Golder).

Runners-up: University of Sydney (Tim Mooney and Julia Fetherston), University of Vermont (Sam Natale and Lucas Caress) and Ateneo De Manila University (Eleanor Zosa and Michael Biscocho).

Best Speaker: Tim Mooney (University of Sydney).

Champion: University of Sydney B (Bronwyn Cowell and Tim Mooney).

Runners-up: University of Sydney A (Chris Croke and Steve Hind), Ateneo De Manila University A (Ely Zosa and Gica Mangahas) and Ateneo De Manila University B (Vicenzo Tagle and Shiveena Pramanand).
