Wis.dm
WIS.DM is a question-based social networking website based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, launched in 2007. As of July 2007, it has over 20,000 unique users.
Format
Wis.dm is based around user-submitted yes-or-no questions, which are limited to 130 characters with an optional "details" field, that can link and upload photos. In addition, users can attach a maximum of 10 topics to a question, under which it becomes filed and searchable by. Wis.dm logs an average of 2,000 questions and 50,000 answers a day.
Questions Appear in the "recent" stream, with popular questions appearing additionally on the "popular" page. The exact formula of answers, comments, and time required for a question to become "popular" remains a company secret.
"Points" are accumulated through participation on the site, however the formula, like that of the "popular" page, is a secret. Members are ranked by their points on the "Leaderboard," where they are listed along with questions asked, answered and commented on.
Based on answers, wis.dm calculates which members "match" one the best, which is rendered as a percentage.
Each wis.dm member has a profile page. This page displays questions they've asked which can be sorted by last answered and last commented, and questions they've answered and commented on themselves. Each member also has a "Bookmark" page. This page displays the questions that they have "bookmarked" and are then stored on the "Bookmark" page for easy future reference.
Trivia
Besides being a medium for people to share their IDeaS, thoughts and finding answers to some of life's most intriguing questions, Wis.dm users have used their voting power and freedom of expression to create in-site "holidays" with trendy names that seem to be spreading to other places of the Web. These include Boobs Wednesday and Kitty Thursday. Days in which the majority of the users online will change their avatar picture for one of a woman's cleavage or a cute member of the felis silvestris catus family.
