Wireless Matrix Corporation (), is a provider of real-time GPS fleet management, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and mobile resource management (MRM) solutions for vehicle fleets. The company provides services to a variety of vertical markets, most notably utilities, telecommunications, cable, rail and home services. Their product offerings include applications provided as Software as a Service (SaaS) via the internet, vehicle-mounted GPS and wireless communication devices, and bundled data communications. The fleet management company also provides Seamless integration of its products with other workforce management, dispatching and vehicle management applications in the vertical markets it serves.

The company is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, with offices in San Francisco, California, and Burnaby, British Columbia.

Pioneer In Early Hybrid Wireless Networks

Wireless Matrix was a pioneer of Terrestrial Packet/Satellite hybrid networks for commercial vehicle fleets. In 1996, the company (then Norcom Networks) partnered with Bell South Wireless Data to develop terrestrial/satellite hybrid devices that would leverage both cellular data and satellite networks via a single provider, with the goal of eliminating coverage gaps in communications for service vehicles. With seamless multi-network routing algorithms that integrated Ku-L-band satellite service with circuit switched cellular, field assets could receive the same quality of service everywhere, enabling common services such as credit card validation, real-time quotes, re-scheduling and same day services; regardless of where they operated. Using an X.25 call setup protocol, the integrated Norcom network provided a 3-5 second message latency, far superior to the then-available polled device options available from ARDIS/Rockwell, which provided a 5-10 minute message latency. The initial deployment of the integrated solution with Sears laid the foundation for the company’s continued development and refinement of integrated cellular/satellite devices and networks. This evolution led to the further integration of 802.11b wireless communications technology into devices to further extend wireless connectivity from vehicles to technician hand-held devices.

History

Wireless Matrix was founded in 1991 as Interprovincial Satellite Services Ltd. (Intersat). Based in Calgary, Intersat provided wireless data and fax services to corporate markets. The company transformed itself into Wireless Matrix in May 2000 and positioned itself in the wireless data services market with the acquisition of Reston, VA, based Norcom Networks Corporation from Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor AS. The company moved its headquarters to Virginia in 2005. The company began to evolve its business model towards the growing market for GPS and fleet management services in 2006. Through internal development and the acquisition of location technology companies MobileAria from Delphi (in 2006) and Sapias, Inc. (2007) , and today provides GPS, vehicle tracking and management, and data communication services to over 86,000 vehicle fleet users in the US and Canada
