Weewar
Introduction
Weewar.com is a round based strategy game. As a browser game it is playable in the latest generation of browsers. It does not require any plug-ins to run. Up to 6 players can command their armies against each other on a growing number of maps. Armies are based on seven different types of units (all ground based). An additional twelve units are available to players of the "pro" version (three air units, four naval units, four additional ground units, and one "hybrid" ground/naval unit).
Weewar is free to play. The optional "pro" version is available against a subscription fee (payable via credit card or PayPal).
Game Setup
To start a game, players choose a map and set a desired speed for the game. Games can be open or for invitees only. In the latter case the game creator can invite up to 5 other players to join. Open games are available for any player to join.
Once started the invitees are able to accept or decline the invitation. The game creator has the opportunity to remove or add further players before the game begins. The players take turns until the games ends. Games end either when all but one player is completely eradicated from the map or through a mutually agreed draw.
Gameplay
Players control their armies on the map within The Browser. While it is their turn, they can capture bases, build new units, attack enemy units or move their armies around. Bases generate income and can be used to build new units. There are 19 different units (seven in the "basic" game, and an additional twelve in the "pro" version) that range from troopers and tanks to jet fighters and battleships.
Current development
Since some of the default maps are not ideally balanced, Weewar has announced a map editor to enable players to create, share and play on their own maps. Fog of war will further address the difficulties to develop and deploy a valid strategy as this is often spoiled by being exposed to all opponents at all times.
3rd Party tools and services for Weewar
Weewar provides an API enabling 3rd party developers to create specialist tools and services extending existing functionality. The current API is read-only and does not allow interaction with the actual games. An extension is planed for Q1 of 2008.
The current version has already attracted an assortment of developments collated in the Weewar tools section.
History
Weewar was announced publicly for the first time in March 2007 after a year of development and a closed test phase. After adding public support and discussion forums it reached a humble 1000 registered players by May 2007. After it was featured on Techcrunch, Kotaku and Mashable in quick succession it reached 10000+ Users within a month. Currently (Aug 2007) it gains roughly 250 new users every day.
