Uncovered Ug
Uncovered UG is a Ugandan digital news website founded in November 2022 by Enock Katamba, who serves as its Founder . The outlet covers national and local news, health, education, business, sports, entertainment, and international affairs, emphasizing underreported community and public-interest stories. It operates in Uganda's competitive digital media sector, which has grown alongside the country's long tradition of print journalism dating back to 1900.
History of media in Uganda
Print Media in Uganda began with missionary efforts during the colonial period. The first newspaper, Mengo Notes later Uganda Notes, was launched in May 1900 by the Church Missionary Society (CMS) as an English-language monthly publication focused on religious and colonial administrative matters. Subsequent titles included Munno (1912, Luganda, Catholic) and Ebifa mu Buganda (Anglican). The first Ugandan-owned newspaper, Sekanyolya (Luganda), emerged around 1920–1921, founded by local landowner W. Kulubya, and addressed local grievances.
Colonial restrictions limited press freedom. Post-independence (1962), the media faced suppression under leaders like Milton Obote and Idi Amin. Significant liberalization occurred after Yoweri Museveni's NRM government took power in 1986, leading to new publications. Key outlets include the government-linked New Vision (1986) and the independent Daily Monitor founded 1992 as The Monitor by journalists seeking editorial independence; it became daily in 1996 and is majority-owned by Kenya's Nation Media Group.
Print circulation has declined due to competition from radio, television, and digital platforms. Recent studies document around 300 digital news platforms, many based in the Kampala area, reflecting a high-turnover but dynamic sector.
