The Sitwe Award
THE SITWE AWARD The Sitwe Award is a distinguished honor conferred upon outstanding students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education in Literacy and Language and the Bachelor of Arts with Education programmes in the School of Education at the University of Zambia. Established in 2019 by the Sitwe Family Council and named in honor of its founder, Dr. Sitwe Benson Mkandawire, the award recognizes exceptional academic achievement, leadership potential, and commitment to excellence in the field of education. This award was created to celebrate students who demonstrate not only strong academic performance, but also a passion for literacy, language development, and service to the community. It reflects the values of dedication, integrity, innovation, and educational transformation that Dr. Mkandawire has consistently championed throughout his career. By rewarding merit and inspiring excellence, the Sitwe Award seeks to motivate future educators to pursue high standards in teaching, research, and professional practice. It stands as a symbol of prestige and encouragement, affirming the University of Zambia’s commitment to nurturing graduates who will make meaningful contributions to national development and the advancement of education. The Sitwe Award is conferred on the School of Education Awards Ceremony Day each year. In 2026, It was conferred to Maxwell Mwanza as overall best graduating student in the Bachelor of Education in Literacy and Language programme.
