The House in the Hole in the Side of the Tree

The House in the Hole in the Side of the Tree is a 1973 children's book written by V. Gilbert Beers. It is a morality story for all ages, and is commonly used as a bedtime story.
Plot
Squire Squirrel is grumpy and old. He is living in a crumbling old house which is built in the side of a tree. His neighbors, other forest-dwelling animals, are very friendly, which irritates the rather antisocial squirrel, as he just wants to be left alone. One partictular day, the squirrel wakes up to the loud banging and crashing of power tools going on down the road. His neighbors constantly pester him by going and asking to borrow tools. Every time, he slams the door in their face, which shakes his old house so much, more of his house crumbles off. The noise also begins shaking the fragile structure. Finally, Squire Squirrel gets so angry, he screams at a neighbor who knocks on his door, where the neighbor calmly proceeds to lead him down the path, to his brand new, sturdy house that they had been building for him all day. Squire Squirrel is ashamed of himself, for his crass and rude behavior, and he cries tears of joy. From then on, Squire Squirrel is nice to his neighbors and is a friend to everyone in the forest.
