The Drake Foundation

The Drake Foundation is a not-for-profit organization based in London, UK. It was established in 2014 by Future Science Group owner James J-P Drake. The stated aims of the foundation are to “improve evidence-based measures for the understanding of concussion injuries in sport, through robust scientific research and insight”.
Vision & Mission
The foundation’s stated objectives are: “1. To carry out dedicated research and investigations into sports-related concussion and its short- and long-term effects, with an ultimate goal of improving measures for participant safety in all contact sports; 2. To sponsor, organise, carry out or be involved in any investigation, research, educational programme or other activity, which is directly or indirectly connected with concussion, head injuries or sport-related illness or injury”.
June 2016: The Drake Foundation announced a collaboration with the Rugby Football Union and leading academics at University College London, The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Queen Mary University of London, and the Institute of Occupational Medicine. The research project aims to provide a more in-depth assessment of the long-term brain health of the players than is currently available from other studies. Under the research group’s plans, 200 retired rugby players, some of them former England internationals, will undergo a series of extensive physical, cognitive, and medical tests to explore the potential association between history of concussion and neurodegenerative disease.
November 2016: On the 23 November The Drake Foundation co-organised the First Annual UK Sports Concussion Research Symposium along with the Rugby Football Union and Football Association.
February 2017: A study funded by The Drake Foundation documenting a case series of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in a sample of former footballers was published in Acta Neuropathologica. The study received widespread media attention, particularly in the British press.
Open access journal
July 2015: The Foundation launched Concussion, a peer-reviewed, open access, scientific journal dedicated to the topic of concussions. The journal is published by Future Science Group on behalf of The Drake Foundation.
