StudyPool

StudyPool is an online tutoring platform that connects students with tutors through a process called Microtutoring.
History
StudyPool was founded in March 2014 by Richard H. S. Werbe and Jimmy Zhong. At the time Werbe and Zhong, who were students at Emory University, spent several weeks hacking together the initial version of the business. The company reached thousands of students within weeks of its launch. Soon after, Werbe dropped out of Emory University to focus on running the venture full time, and Zhong graduated from Emory in 2015. The California based company has publicly raised $2.3 million. Investors include 500 Startups, Lerer Hippeau, Great Oaks, and Fabrice Grinda.
Concept
According to StudyPool, its mission is to democratize learning, giving equal learning opportunities to all. Using marketplace functionality, StudyPool connects students and tutors via SMS on a per question basis.
