Strieder

Strieder is a German family surname originating from the Westerwald district of Germany.

Most families with this name seem to be centred particularly around the village of Winkels near to Mengerskirchen and Weilburg an der Lahn, many emigrated from there to the USA in the 1800s and early 1900s to escape the hardships of the difficult conditions and land in that area. The basalt in the Area made working the land difficult and gave poor yields. Others moved to Bavaria to farm better grounds, or to the various mountain areas of Germany to take up mining, then many were skilled stone masters and quarried Basalt and/or other rocks from the Westerwald area.

The Mayor of Winkels (Mengerskirchen) was a Strieder and responsible in 1880 for building the church in Winkels with his name

In more modern times another Strieder became mayor of Kreuzberg in Berlin then senator for regional development
