Stanislav Shekshnia
Stanislav Shekshnia (born May 29, 1964, Moscow) is a Senior Affiliate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Enterprise at INSEAD where he directs the Leading from the Chair Programme. His research concentrates on leadership, leadership development and effective governance at emerging markets and organizations. Stanislav Shekshnia is a senior partner at Ward Howell talent equity advisory, which has offices in Moscow, Paris, St. Petersburg, Kiev, and Alma-Aty. Stanislav provides advice and personal coaching to business owners, senior executives and executive teams.
Dr. Shekshnia is a Chair of the board of directors of Russian Fishery and a board member at NLMK and Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS). He has served as a Chair of SUEK, Vimpelcom-R and a board member of a number of Russian and international companies. In 1991-2002 Stanislav Shekshnia held positions of CEO, Alfa-Telecom, President and CEO, Millicom International Cellular, Russia and CIS, Chief Operating Officer of VimpelCom, Director of Human Resources, Central and Eastern Europe of Otis Elevator.
Early life and education
Shekshnia was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. In 1988, he graduated from Moscow State University. As a Master of Arts in Economics he went to the United States for further studies and obtained a MBA degree from Northeastern University, Boston in 1992. He holds doctoral degree in Organizational Behavior from the Moscow State University.
Career
Corporate career
From 1992 to 1998, Shekshnia worked at the Otis Elevator Company in the position of Director of Human Resources and Operations in Central and Eastern Europe. In 1998, he joined at VimpelCom Ltd and served as its First Deputy General Director and Chief Operating Officer. From 1999 to 2002, he worked for two more telecommunications companies, Millicom and Alfa-Telecom, holding the position of Chief Executive Officer. He also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK), DTEK, Moscow Cellular Communication (MCC), Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), Ener1 and FORA Telecom.
In 2002, Shekshnia co-founded Zest Leadership, a business consulting company with Paul Kiryuhantsev, which was merged in 2007 with Ward Howell. He provided coaching on leadership, leadership development, and intercultural management to business owners and corporate executives of various organizations including BP, TNK-BP, KAMAZ, Telecominvest, Gazpromneft, DTEK and United Technologies. In 2009, he founded the Talent Equity Institute, engaged in research of the Russian and international business organizations and leaders.
Academic career
Shekshnia started his academic career at the Moscow State University in 1989 as assistant professor in the Faculty of Economics, where he served for two years. During his career, he has taught at a number of graduate level universities in Russia, France and the United States.
After completing his PhD, he served as a Visiting Lecturer at Ecole Superieure de Commerce (ESC), Ecole Supérieure de Commerce and Northeastern University in Boston. In 1994 he moved back to Russia, where he was appointed as a visiting professor at the International Management Institute of St. Petersburg (IMISP). Shekshnia's career, at the IMISP lasted for 9 years. He also served as a visiting professor at École supérieure de commerce de Paris from 1995 to 2003 and California State University's Moscow campus from 1999 to 2001.
In 2003, Shekshnia joined the Faculty of INSEAD, business school in France as an Adjunct Professor of entrepreneurship, where in 2006 he became an Affiliate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Enterprise.

Shekshnia is an author, co-author and editor of seven books, including "Managing People in Contemporary Organization" (1995), "Kak Eto Skazat Po-Russki: Western Management Methods in Russia" (2003), "Corporate Governance in Russia" (edited with S. Puffer and D. McCarthy, 2004), "The New Russian Business Leaders" (with M. Kets de Vries and associates, 2004) and "Coaching for Executives" (2010).
He has published book chapters, articles, interviews and case studies on corporate governance, entrepreneurship, leadership, people management and intercultural management. His research appeared in various journals including the Academy of Management Executive, Harvard Business Review, Organizational Dynamics, The Economist, Forbes, Slon.ru, the Fortune, European Management Review, Vedomosti, Kommersant, Money and others.
