Origins

It's stylistic origins are: Punk,Punk Rock and Grunge.

The genre acquired it's name from the Beetlejuice demo Smeg Punk.

The influences of these genres are visible both lyrically and instrumentally. Smeg Punk takes it's distorted guitar and bass tone directly from grunge, while the drums play fast beats normally associated with punk music.

It is a fairly recent genre (1991 - present). Prominent bands in the genre are:

Beetlejuice
Purple Brunch

The genre was created by bands not wanting to be tied down by criteria of any specific genre and being able to play what they wanted without being told that it wasn't their style of music.

Characteristics

Despite creating a genre to get away from restricting labels, Smeg Punk is still defined by an electric guitar, bass and drums ,with either the bassist or guitarist singing. But some bands have had separate vocalists.

Much like punk, the guitar is distorted and the majority of bands that are said to be Smeg Punk, have short, sharp songs (AbOUT 1-2 minutes).

The vocals of Smeg Punk are not unlike traditional punk vocals, and are more often than not, shouted rather than sung. In many of Beetlejuice's songs, the vocals convey anger and/or frustration.

The bands more often than not, wrote songs that offended people and were full of swearing, while this is considered by some to just be for shock value, many Smeg Punk fans consider it an attempt to put across anger and disdain. Many of the bands wrote songs that raised questions about the generation gap, drugs and crime.

Fashion

Smeg Punk mostly scorned music fashion and looked down on dressing a certain way to fit in. Bands usually wore whatever was most comfortable on stage.

With this being said, many of the members chose to wear studded jackets and have liberty spikes due to the influence of punk fashion and music on Smeg Punk.

The genre though, has never had it's own 'dress code'.
