SmarTrike

smarTrike is a company making tricycles for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. The company specializes in the production category of Grow-With-Me tricycles. Every second child in the United Kingdom owns a smarTrike.

History of Children's Tricycles

In the past, tricycles were typically used by children from the age of two and up – children that could pedal and steer. Such a trike was controlled by the child only. Soon after, a parent handle was added to the tricycles, enabling the parent to push the tricycle forward while the child was pedaling.

Steerable Parent Handle

The first significant revolution in the development of the tricycle appeared early in the 2000s, when steering ability was added to the parent handle. The front wheel of the trike was connected to the parent handle with internal cables. Maneuvering and steering the tricycle was done by pushing the parent handle from side to side. The steerable handle reduced the age of child using the tricycle to as young as 10 months old. By adding the steering ability, a whole new commercial category was created within the field of children's tricycles – a bike designed for babies from 10 months old.

Touch Steering

In 2012, introduced to the world the Touch Steering technology. Touch Steering patented technology enables smooth and easy maneuvering with the lightest touch on the parent handle. The handle in a Touch Steering smarTrike tricycle is not steerable. In fact it does not move at all. Instead the steering actually comes from the super swivel wheel. The steering is intuitive and simple, as it is in premium strollers.

smarTrike is a 3 times winner (different products) of the famous Dr. Toy awards both in the category of Best Picks of New Products and 100 Best Children's Products. The awards were given by Stevanne Auerbach, PhD, the well-known American educator, child development expert and toyologist.

In her review, Dr. Toy describes the smarTrike brand as the most advanced trike in the world due to its Touch Steering technology and high standards of safety features. She feels that going outdoor in a smarTrike can help toddlers develop more confidence and improve basic motor skills.

Dream (Formerly known as Zoo) – smarTrike's most popular model of tricycle.
