The charity provides accommodation and support services for homeless and socially excluded people, including those suffering from mental health issues, substance abuse, or at risk of criminal behavior.
Background
The Single Homeless Project was established by a group of homeless single men in London and registered as a charity in 1977. In 1984 it became incorporated as a company limited by guarantee. As of 2009 it provided services in the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Brent, Camden, Hackney, Havering, Islington, Lambeth, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Wandsworth and Westminster City Council.
The charity employs staff of approximately 150 and supports 2,000 people a year providing "accommodation" and "floating support" services. "Accommodation" services involve providing hostel room or temporary housing for service users. SHP manages 430 units of housing as both temporary and permanent accommodation. "Floating Support" provides service users with a support worker who will help them find or keep housing and help them with personal issues including mental health problems, learning disabilities, substance abuse or violence and criminality.
SHP supports another 800 people in housing associations, private rentals, bed and breakfasts, and other temporary accommodations.
