Shalimar Radio
Shalimar Radio Los Angeles, founded by Ursal Awan and Khalid Imran, is foremost in the liberal Islamic movements of modern times. Started by a Pakistani American citizen's group in Los Angeles in 2008, this radio program hosts weekly Urdu lectures on The Quran delivered by Asarul'Islam Syed
. Asarul’Islam Syed, M.D, a california based neurologist and psychiatrist, is a dedicated pupil of Pakistan’s renowned Quranic scholar and thinker, Ghulam Ahmed Pervez. Asarul’Islam delivers the rational message of The Quran from Shalimar Radio in Los Angeles every Saturday at noon on Channel 900 AM.
Shalimar Radio proclaims that Islam is not a mere religion but is a system of Government, of the Faithful and by the Faithful, established for the welfare of everybody. They denounce superstitious rituals and beliefs. They proclaim and celebrate a God that guarantees to deliver equality and justice to everybody through a Government based on His laws. They see all mankind as one nation under the law of One God. Since Islam is considered by them as the ultimate idea that holds the key to the human problem, they believe that only Islam can deliver mankind from various systems of human exploitation.
They advocate that whereas the future happiness and prosperity of the entire human race depends on Islam, therefore it is imperative to establish The Modern Islamic Caliphate, founded on principles of a transparent Democracy. They believe that establishment of a modern Islamic Caliphate was the goal of Pakistan. This goal could not be achieved because of the narrow mindedness of the Mullahs. "We need to liberate the hijacked Islam and march towards this goal," says Asarul'Islam. He believes that the establishment of a modern Islamic caliphate in Pakistan will eradicate the Mullahs. The Shalimar Radio movement aims to unify the Muslims of the entire world and bring them on one platform, irrespective of the sectarian or political background in which they were born into. Their motto is:"Let us denounce all hero-worship, discard all superstitious rituals and unite to promote The Message of Justice and Equality through the law of God." Their core belief is Islam: World Peace, through equality and justice, based on the law of God." They celebrate their Faith. They salute the founder of Islam, Muhammed the Great, who delivered to mankind the only genuine ideology for peace in the world. They salute the founding fathers of Islam. They revere all Apostles. They condemn priesthood and theocracy.
Liberal Muslims generally claim that they are returning to the principles of the early Ummah and to the ethical and pluralistic intent of their scripture, the Qur'an. They distance themselves from some traditional and less liberal interpretations of Islamic law, as they consider these to be culturally-based and without universal applicability. The reform movement uses monotheism (tawhid) "as an organizing principle for human society and the basis of religious knowledge, history, metaphysics, aesthetics, and ethics, as well as social, economic and world order."
