Scary sharp

Sharpening jigs used to sharpen chisels and plane blades

Scary sharp is a method of sharpening woodworking tools with sandpaper instead of conventional methods of oilstone or waterstone sharpening. The name is sometimes written with a trademark symbol (™) for humorous effect.

A sharpening method using sandpaper and glass was passed down through apprenticeship woodworking programs as early as the 1950s - 1960s. Some believe that it pre-dates World War II.
