Sarmals (Hindi : सड़माल),(Gurmukhi : ਸਦਮਾਲ),(Urdu : ,سڑمال ,)are Dogra-Pahari Rajputs belonging to the Suryavanshi Rajputs Lineage, having their estate in the Shivalik Hills of the Jammu and Kashmir. Their autonomy was over sauram / sodam hills found in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Warrior and Landlord Community

Sarmal is the warrior and Landlord community. They were active warrior and as landlord they owned the lands, also farmed upon them. Majority of the them are concentrated in the Samba District of the State of Jammu & Kashmir, India. But also found in jammu, kathua, Doda, Katra and bhaderwah etc. Some population also resides in Punjab and many other nearby states like Himachal Pradesh.They are the known to be direct descendants of Bhagwan (Lord) Ram .The Incarnation of Lord Ram took place 881,243 years ago approx.. in Treta Yuga. They are Surya (Sun) Vanshi Rajputs. Their gotra is Bhardwaj. Rishi Bhardwaj was the (mental) son of Bhagwan (Lord) Brahma, the Creator of the Universe.

Vansh or Dynasty

The Sun Dynasty is oldest among Kshatriyas. The first person of this dynasty was "Vivaswan," who by the meaning of his name is considered to be "Surya." Ikshvaku was the first important king of this dynasty.Other important kings were Kakutsth Harishchandra, Sagar, Dileepa, Bhagiratha, Raghu , Dashratha and Rama.

Origin of Clan

The societies in Himalayan region from Jammu region of J&K to Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand, shared a pattern of History, where numerous small kingdoms, scattered over hills and small valleys. To term it more precisely, these 'kingdoms' were rather fortified villages of warrior-landlords. Most of Rajput groups in today 's Jammu has origin in these kingdoms, the name of which became that of each town/place as well of each rajput clan. The name of Sauram hills and Sarmal clan both have their roots in hills of Sauram (about 50–55 km south-east of jammu city). ''Sarmal Clan was established by the Suryavanshi Rajputs who migrated to Sauram estate & created their autonomy there. The Rajje of Sauram from then begin to be known as Sarmals.There are many sub-clans of Sarmal are also available who migrated to another places and gave rise to sub - clans. These Clans are found near neighbouring area of sauram.' Sauram is known to be the estate of SARMALS (means Prominent Thikana) because of their autonomy over the place.

Usage

Some other community also uses this surname, it doesn't means they are Rajput. Everyone having a surname of Rajput clan is not always a Rajput. There are instances when other caste servants of the Rajputs also started using the title of the clan, the Rajputs living with them know that they are not Rajputs but their servants but outsiders not knowing may confuse these to be a Rajput. Also suppose a Rajput marries a lower varna or caste his children will not be considered as Rajputs, a term gola is used for them . No true Rajput will marry his children. So even though children may use the title of his father they are no longer considered as Rajputs and that forces these children to marry in other castes and they are no longer Rajputs. That is, A Rajput must be pure blooded and all his ancestors must be from Rajput clans. True Rajputs are connected with each other by blood relations like a web.
