Ruud Vermeij
Ruud Vermeij MA.PhD ( born Rudolf Vermeij on 1953) is a former Dutch Latin Dance Professionals Champion and professional ballroom dancer, dance teacher, choreographer, lecturer, coach, author, counsellor, psychotherapist and Director of World Dance Council Education Department.
He was born in the Hague in the Netherlands, the son of two artist: Joop Vermeij ( painter and opera singer ) and Riet Vermeij van der Kreek (opera singer and choir conductor).
Dancer career
After a career as a theatre dancer in Europe ( France, Portugal ), Asia ( Hong Kong), North and Latin America, he started competing as a professional ballroom dancer with Yvonne Vrolijk.
He later switched partners and danced with Britain’s Debbie Fletcher, became a member of the Dutch National Team and moved into the final of the European and semifinal of the World Professional Latin Championship.
Teaching career
After dance competitions he opened a dance studio with Yvonne van der Niet as manager, and started studying various dance forms and therapies. Ruud was accepted to the Laban Centre, and started his studies under Valerie Preston-Dunlop. He travelled back and forth between Holland and England teaching and studying, and began to apply his new findings to ballroom dancing. He soon had a following, and produced results in competitive couples. The early most notable were Louis Van Amstel and Julie Fryer who became Amateur World champions in 1994.
He was Director and Coach of a Dance school and The NDSA Netherlands Dance Academy 1985-1999.
With Peter Townsend and Maximilian Winkelhuis, Ruud formed the Institution for Dance Development in Alphen a/d Rijn,the Netherlands, where they coached and organized courses for professionals and amateurs.
Later on they, created Team Amsterdam. The purpose of Team Amsterdam was promoting and growing dancers of all ages and levels by educating them not only in dancing, but in all aspects of dance-sport, including physiology, psychology, choreography and teaching methods.
As a professor he worked in various academic institutions and have taught workshops, and presented seminars in:

* Codarts,University for the Arts in Rotterdam the Netherlands,
* Norwegian National Academy of Ballet;
