ROYAL JELLY

DESCRIPTION
In the larval stage, there is no difference between queen, worker, and drone bees. In the first two days of life, each bee larva is fed a special “milk” which a nurse bee secretes from a gland in its head. This secretion is called “royal jelly.” It is so potent that in two days the larvae change into little bees, and are then taken off royal jelly and fed a diet of honey and pollen. However, the bee chosen to be the next “queen” continues to be fed only royal jelly. Now something extraordinary takes place. This chosen queen grows into a female considerably larger in size than ordinary bees. She lives 40 times longer, and is capable of laying up to 2,000 eggs per day, which is 2 and 1/2 times her own weight!
An analysis of royal jelly shows that it is packed with nutrients. Most of the B vitamins are present (thiamin, riboflavin, nicotinic acid, biotin, inositol, folic acid, pyridoxine, cobalamin, and pantothenic acid) as is vitamin C. The minerals found include calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, iron, manganese, zinc and cobalt. Other nutrients include amino acids (the building blocks of protein), sugars, fatty acids, hormones and nucleotides (nucleic acids).
Research shows that royal jelly stimulates the adrenal glands and produces an increase in the body’s metabolic rate. This may be responsible for the reports of increased energy, enhanced sexual capabilities, and increased appetite.
Royal jelly is the richest source of natural acetylcholine, the important neurotransmitter that allows many of the nerve endings in the brain to transmit nerve impulses from one nerve fiber to another. It is acetylcholine that has been found to be deficient in the tangled bundles of nerve endings in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. This helps explain the most significant symptom in this affliction, memory loss.
In addition, royal jelly is very rich in biotin and nucleic acids, the latter making up the DNA of each cell’s chromosomes. In combination, these nutrients help promote cell tissue regeneration. There still remain a small percentage of components in royal jelly that have not as yet been identified. Royal jelly maintains its highest potency when suspended in natural honey.
