Robert Izsak
Robert Izsak (Hungarian: Izsák Robert, born 29 May 1992) is a Canadian-Hungarian professional ice hockey player from Maple Ridge, British Columbia currently playing college hockey for Simon Fraser University in the BCIHL and NCAA.
He has previously played for Debreceni Hoki Klub of the MOL Liga, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies of the CIS as well as Alba Volán Székesfehérvár of the EBYSL.
Playing career
Early Career
Rob spent his entire youth hockey career with the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association. During his final year of minor hockey he would represent the Hungarian under-18 and under-20 national teams.
Junior Career
His junior career began with the Campbell River Storm of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League in 2010/2011, finishing second in team scoring as well as being selected to the league all-star game and Storm rookie of the year.
Beginning the 2011/2012 season with the Campbell River Storm he was soon signed by the Aurora Tigers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League where he amassed 4 points in his first 4 games, however he would go pointless in his next 6 games leading to him being traded to the Pictou County Crushers of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League. He would finish the year pointless in his 14 games played including playoffs.
Professional Career
During the summer of 2012 he would sign with Alba Volán Székesfehérvár of the EBYSL choosing to play in the country of his parents birth. That year he would go on to win the Austrian and Hungarian league and cup double beating Czech team Orli Znojmo and Hungary's Ujpesti TE. He chose to re-sign for the following season as well amassing 29 points in 52 games across all competition. That year his team would finish second in the Austrian league losing to HDD Olimpija Ljubljana in the league finals, they would however defend their Hungarian title giving him 3 championships over two seasons with the Hungarian side.
CIS Career
During the summer of 2014 he would decide to commit to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies of the CIS turning down several European offers in the process. However league rules would force him to redshirt the entire 2014/2015 season, limiting him to non-league competition only. This led to his eventual departure in the summer of 2015.
MOL Liga
After receiving multiple offers from teams throughout Europe, he would decide to return to Hungary in 2015, ultimately signing with second year team Debreceni Hoki Klub. His season however was marred by multiple injuries including a broken jaw in the pre-season and a broken leg immediately upon his return, eventually missing out on the 2015-16 play-offs. He would be limited to just 24 games amassing 3 points over that stretch.
Return to College
While receiving multiple offers throughout Europe, and spending time on a professional tryout contract (PTO) with HK Poprad of the Slovak Extraliga he would ultimately decide to return to Canada to once again play collegiate hockey in an effort to return to full fitness following multiple injuries the prior season. Committing to Simon Fraser University of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League and NCAA.
International career
He has represented both the Hungarian U-18 and U-20 national teams. In 2009 he participated in a 3-game series with the U-18 team against Russia collecting 2 assists in those three games.
