Rex Chiu
Rex Chiu, MD MPH is a well-known concierge medicine physician in the Bay Area. He is the founder of Beyond Basics Medical Practice, a retainer medicine practice, in Menlo Park, California
Chiu was born in New Jersey but grew up in Feng-Yuan, a medium sized city in central Taiwan. He attended Smithtown High School East and went on to the prestigious Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) at Brown University where he received a bachelor degree in Applied Mathematics and Economics in 1989 and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1994. He also received a Masters of Public Health degree from Harvard University School of Public Health in 1994.
Chiu completed his clinical training in Internal Medicine at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center from 1994-1997. Subsequently, he joined Stanford Medical Group in Palo Alto and became faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine. He served as the clerkship director for Internal Medicine clerkship for Stanford from 1999-2007. During that time, he was voted Best Teacher in Division of General Internal Medicine multiple times.
Chiu founded the Pacific Free Clinic, which is based at Overfeldt High School in San Jose, with a group of Stanford Medical School students in 2004. They provide free care to mostly immigrant patients with little access to healthcare. He was also the founding medical director of Hep B Free Clinic in 2006.
In 2008, Rex Chiu left Stanford Medical Group, a faculty practice of Stanford University in Palo Alto, to form an innovative medicine practice Beyond Basics Medical Practice where he practices retainer based primary care, also known as Concierge medicine or Boutique medicine.
Chiu is a sponsor of the successful Richard Sachs Cyclocross Team. He is an avid cyclist, and he came in 8th for his age group in the 24 Hours of Adrenaline Solo World Championships in 2007.
