Resistance and Liberation

Resistance and Liberation is a multiplayer World War 2 Half-Life 2 first-person shooter modification that tries to be as realistic as possible, while still being enjoyable to play. The mod offers you the chance to play as either American or German on very large (to source terms) maps.

Gameplay

Obviously, a game can never be compared to the real-life thing; death and injuries can never be as punishing as they were to real people. And although death isn't as permanent in RnL as it is in real life, you still want to stay alive for as long as you can. The Developers have put in more sophisticated rules and gameplay than you would find in the average shooter. In other games, you would want to avoid grouping up with other players, simply because it makes you a bigger target and you don't have many advantages, because the gameplay is fast. In RnL however, staying in groups is the best way to stay alive and to win the round. Not only because this increases your firepower, but also because more people means more eyes to look around. Playing carefully, that is to say: sneak and camp; are common techniques that are used in this game, as they were in real life as well.

The game is based on capturing and holding objectives. These are not flags, like in other games, but they cover buildings, trenches and/or other areas. Objectives require multiple people to be near them to be captured. One of the things that make RnL that much more lively and interesting is the 'progressive spawning'. This is a system that automatically changes the place where you spawn, depending on the objectives you have. Since the maps are so big, this ensures that you don't have to run all the way across the map to get to the front.

Weapon control is much harder than in other games, and requires practice in order to gain some 'feeling' with the different weapons. While it is true that the weapons have been made life-like, this also means that certain weapons have unbalanced advantages over others. In real life, a group of American soldiers equipped with M1 garands should have no problems taking out a group of German rifleman, using K98Ks. Other games would tweak the weapons to make them individually balanced: The garand would have less firepower to make it more fair. In RnL however, balance is gained by teamplay. The maps are GeneRally designed to have the Americans as the offensive team and the Germans as the defensive one. Further more, the Germans can rely on their Machine-gunners to back them up.

A game of RnL is usually played in several squads, depending on the team you're in: The German side consists of 2 different groups. The Americans are split into 2 squads, each split into 2 fireteams; each fireteam is led by an NCO.
