Rebel Regiment
Patrick Henry High School-Glade Spring The Rebel Regiment is the marching band for Patrick Henry High School and is known as one of the best marching bands in Southwest Virginia. The band has also won grand champion several times at places such as the 2007 Chilhowie Apple Festival, 2007 Lonesome Pine Band Festival, Class A-AA grand champion at the 2007 Greeneville Band Classic and 5th place over all, 2008 Avery County Band Festival, Class A-AA grand champion at the 2008 Greeneville Band Classic and 4th place over all, and the 2008 McChesney Festival.
1960-2004
The Rebel Regiment has had band directors such as Jim Woodrum, Pat Mason, Richard Huggins, Greg Case, Tami Harmon, Jenny Vogel. In 2005 the school announced that the current band director, Jenny Vogel, was resigning to take a job in Salem, VA. The school system then hired David Semones and Bob Ballengee.
From Robert R.:
I am a former band member when it became the Rebel Regiment. More details need to be added for the years Pat Mason was there until he left after 1987. It was his idea to change the name to "Regiment". I graduated in 1986 and can attest to numerous awards on the local, regional, state and national level. Those include, and are not limited to, winning the Lynchburg Invitational for 3 consecutve years (1985, 1986, 1987 I believe) against bands much bigger than us. We placed 4th in the Mardi Gras street drill competitions, out of 12 bands invited from around the country. We won many times in Knoxville, TN at the Dogwood Festival, both in marching and concert competitions. If I recall, from the time I was in the 8th grade until I was a senior (we were 8-12 then), we had won AbOUT 115-130 different trophies as I recall having a picture taken with the 1986 seniors posing with the trophies in front and around us. So more needs to be added to the Pat Mason era. He is a great guy and taught me many things not just about music, but about life itself.
I am talking about a man that once promised us if we won a particular competition, he would climb on top of one of the buses and dance. Sure enough we won it, he got on the bus and danced, all the while his wife Susan saying nervously "Pat...Pat..please be careful...Pat..." He was the greatest. To me, he was into his job so much, he was the "Bill Cowher" of band directing. He didn't just direct, he got involved and cared.
