Rachel's Shoe
Rachel's Shoe is a fictional novel which includes accurate information AbOUT the German Occupation of the Bailiwick of Guernsey in the British Channel Islands during World War Two.
The author, Peter Lihou, is a local to the islands and drew upon stories told to him as a child by relations who lived through the occupation. His father, Maurice Lihou MBE, left Guernsey at the outbreak of War to join the Royal Air Force and flew as a pilot during the Italian Campaign. Maurice met Peter's mother when she was serving in the Women's Royal Air Force and they started a family together shortly after the end of the War. Peter was born in Bognor Regis in November 1950.
The novel Rachel's Shoe includes a dramatised but historically accurate account of the Liberation of Guernsey as well as an account of a commando raid carried out by the British on the occupied 'Casquettes' Lighthouse.
