PO-MO Project
The PO-MO Project is a visual arts/new media collaboration, including architectural projection, video mapping, flash animation, and live video manipulation. The project is the brainchild of Meghan Athavale (VJ PO-MO), based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba. An animator for more than 12 years, VJ PO-MO uses her animation skills, her knowledge of particle systems, and her understanding of music theory to create installations that highlight the depths of the music she works with. The name 'PO-MO' is short for Post Modern, referring to the project's focus on using recycled and consumer grade electronics and traditional animation techniques in a new media environment.
Although the market for pricy VJ gear is booming, the home workshop is the place where much of the development in audio visualization is happening. “Our programmer built a multi-touch surface in an afternoon using materials he found around his apartment,” says PO-MO. “I learned to make a huge back-projection screen out of $5 worth of wax paper. Skot has rigged up LED throwies and modified controllers made out of used and found equipment.”
A Winnipeg artist is using her work to draw residents together in a tough neighbourhood on Simcoe Street.
History
The project began in January 2009, and has since performed with many internationally acclaimed bands and DJs, including the Stanton Warriors, MSTRKRFT, and Vitaminsforyou.
PO-MO Project has been featured in several online music publications since it's inception, and was voted 'Winnipeg's Favorite New Visual Artist' by Uptown (magazine) in 2009.
On November 18 2009, PO-MO Project was featured on CTV News demonstrating an interactive installation during an unsanctioned street party to raise public awareness about crime in her neighborhood.
