Multi-sensory aesthetic experience
Multi-sensory aesthetic experience (MAE) is an idea developed by Jacob Marshall, the drummer of the Norfolk, VA-based rock band Mae (named after the hypothesis). Marshall developed the theory as a self-created major at Norfolk's Old Dominion University. MAE deals with the translating of sensory experience across modes. In other words, taking a passage of sound that evokes an emotion and translating that into a visual, based on all of the different variables that Contribute to it. The MAE theory primarily concerns art's ability to affect multiple senses simultaneously.
Marshall said that he had based a lot of his research off of people with synesthesia and perfect pitch.1
An example of the theory includes the translation of music into an associated color. For example, his lack of knowledge of written music inspired Jimi Hendrix to supposedly communicate his MusicAL IDeaS to his band members through the description of the music's associated colors.
