Peter Lynch (Australian miner)
Peter Lynch (February 1964) is an Australian mining engineer.
Lynch was born in Caringbah, Australia, the second child of Dr Gilbert Lynch and wife Judy and attended local Catholic schools, then studied mining engineering at the University of NSW, graduating in 1988. Moving to Queensland to work on coal projects for BHP, he met his wife Laura, a geologist. The couple have three children.
Lynch's big break came in 1995, when he was appointed Mine Manager of MIM's Oaky North Underground Mine, a poorly-performing mine which he turned into a profitable venture within three years. MIM then appointed him GM of Lead Zinc Development and by 2002 he was the MD of Australian Premium Coals Pty Ltd. (APC).
Lynch left MIM to work with a Japanese-owned mining company, Gallipoli Mining, then was involved in the set-up of Galilee Basin coal giant Waratah Coal in 2006. He was President and CEO for several years but left citing family reasons in 2010, shortly after the buyout of the company by Clive Palmer.
Lynch set up mining exploration company Cokal in 2009 which owns coal mines in Kalimantan and East Africa and is expected to start coal production in 2013.
He also holds an interest in several property developments including Evans Head AirPark, a residential air park development for people who own private planes.
