Penny-ante

Penny-Ante is an independent journal in book form published once a year, compiling personal entries from artists, writers, and musicians. Their mailing address states the publishing house in located is Los Angeles, CA but little is known concerning who runs Penny-Ante. There is no listings within the book, but an interview was conducted in 2006 by Internet zine Chief Magazine stating Mimi Young as the publisher.

The first EDition, Book #1 was published in May 2006 and included such contributors as Josephine Foster, Don Bolles of The GERMS, Devendra Banhart, Xiu Xiu, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, artist Travis Millard, Eleni Mandell, XBXRX, Hawnay Troof, artist Mel Kadel, Residual Echoes, Kentucky band Warmer Milks, Ariel Pink, Women & Children, and features cover art by underground Los Angeles artist Jason Yates of the Fast Friends Inc. project.

The second edition, Book #2 was published in June 2007 and included such contributors as Silver Apples, Lavender Diamond, Bill Callahan of Smog, Camera Obscura, Alice Bag of The Bags, The Clientele, artist Winston Smith, Jennifer Herrema (of Royal Trux), Lene Lovich, The Moon Upstairs, Greg Ashley of Gris Gris, Jana Hunter, Slim Moon (founder of Kill Rock Stars), Los Angeles band The Bubonic Plague, Farmer Dave Scher (All Night Radio, Beachwood Sparks, Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins), Moris Tepper (Captain Beefheart, PJ Harvey, Tom Waits, Robyn Hitchcock), Nora Keyes (ex The Centimeters), and The Space Lady.

The website states that they work with no paid advertising and rely on money from their sales to continue.

In 2007, they branched out and started an indie music label, Gifted Children Records featuring new music from Silver Apples, Women & Children, The Moon Upstairs, and The Space Lady.
