The Nurses are fictional monsters in the Konami's survival horror video game series Silent Hill. They have appeared in some form in most of the Silent Hill games and other media. They are primarily found in Alchemilla Hospital and Brookhaven Hospital. Along with Pyramid Head and Walter Sullivan, they are one of the best recognised monsters of the series.

History

Silent Hill

In the first Silent Hill, they are called the Puppet Nurse and are seen wearing old-fashioned nurse attire and attack using a scalpel. They are also controlled by a parasite, giving them a humpbacked appearance. They come from Alessa's fear of Hospitals and nurses.

Silent Hill 2

In Silent Hill 2, they are called the Bubble Head Nurse. Here, they wear suggestive, low-cut outfits and their heads are grotesquely swollen and face backwards, convulsing violently. The nurses are quicker on their feet than most of the other monsters and wield pipes that can deal heavy damage. They represent Mary's hospitalization, and their attire and shapely bodies are a manifestation of James' [...] frustration.

Silent Hill 3

The nurses in Silent Hill 3 have a more "human"-like appearance, although their FACES are still hidden as all of them hang their heads low, and their skin is nearly stark white. All of them have short black hair and the tops of their uniforms are partly open around the top of the chest. As well as the standard pipe they all use to attack with, some also carry revolvers; movements are analogous to the Puppet Nurse of the first Silent Hill. They make heavy panting sounds when alive, strange squishing sounds every time they walk, and scream realistically when hurt. On their faces, it appears they have either vomited up blood or have been feeding on bloody carcasses, as blood is spattered all around their mouths. If the perfume is equipped, they lose their ability to fire their guns, instead swinging the butt of their revolver at Heather (reducing their attack range). They represent Heather's buried memories when she was Alessa.

Silent Hill 4: The Room

Although they do not appear in this game, in Silent Hill 4's Hospital World there are creatures called the Patient, which differ from the nurses of the past games in their appearance and fighting style. They are extremely tall, half [...] feminine corpses that supposedly resemble maternity patients. They carry what appear to be crutches or bent pipes that they swing back and forth with one hand. In the past, they used to be normal corpses, but Walter excessively disfigured their faces and removed their wombs and lungs. They make strange belching noises when hit, and their movements are bizarrely masculine as they StRUT when they walk and will often walk circles around the protagonist. They symbolize Walter's birth anxieties.

Silent Hill: Origins

The nurses found in Silent Hill: Origins are quite similar to the ones found in the second and third installments, with the exception of using syringes. They vary in two colors, but there is no known difference between them. They represent Travis' [...] anxiety.

Silent Hill: The Arcade

Screen shots reveal that Nurses resembling those from Silent Hill 3 make an appearance in the light gun shooter Silent Hill: The Arcade.

Silent Hill V

In the upcoming Silent Hill V too, the nurses have been confirmed in some screenshots, one of them features the main character Alex when he's attacking two nurses with a knife, causing injuries on one of them in real time. They are nearly the same as those of the film: same rips on face and same outfits.

Film

The Nurses appear briefly in the Silent Hill film, near the ending. They are provocatively dressed and have distorted faces, resembling the nurses from Silent Hill 2. Here, they also represent Alessa's envy of the adult female body, that she can never have.

Rose Da Silva finds them when advancing upon Alessa, but they only move when she turns her lamp on. Rose tries to sneak between them, but she is detected. One nurse blindly swings her blade, [...] another nurse's throat. They all soon begin to swing their weapons [...] one another. Rose uses this to escape and go through them.
