Nandikolla Gopala Rao

Nandikolla Gopala Rao is know as the Father of Modern Contemporary Art in Andhra Pradesh.

Early life

N.Gopala Rao was born to Nandikolla Venkateswarao .He came from a Zamindari family in Injiram Coconada Andhra pradesh.N.gopala Rao was married to Surnarayanama. He was a Self Taught artist who started to paint at the age of Thirteen. there is a saying for this village injiram as “Vidvat Kunjaram”meaning a living place for profound pandits.Mostly orthodoxed bhramins lived in injiram.

Career

N.Gopala Rao was the most honoured artist by the Raja's of Vijanagaram, Bobbili, Pithapuram, Parlakimidi and Tuni, were he was invited at there courts to paint the portraits of the Kings.The art was not well recognized due to colonial rule where Indian artist’s lacked oppurtunties .N.gopala rao is renowned as a great artist after Raja Ravi Varma . Though he who could not take art beyond the boundaries of palaces in the early 20th century his oleographs are limited to an extent that very few of his paintings were oleographed in Germany.It was an expensive issue to send to Germany to produce high quality prints of his paintings .

N.Gopala Rao's brother Sri. N.Venkata. Reddi Naidu was a fine landscape painter. N.V Reddi naidu accompanied by his brother to many competitions. His eldest daughter was married to Raja K.J.V Naidu of kuppam.
