Meiram – The Fireline

Meiram – The Fireline is a 2022 Indian Meitei language documentary film written, directed, and produced by James Khangenbam. It is 33 minutes in duration. It is non-fiction in genre. It tells the real life story of an 18-year environmental movement led by activist Moirangthem Loiya and a group of volunteers to regrow and protect a 300-acre barren forest in the Punshilok area of the Langol Hills on the outskirts of Imphal, Manipur.

The film received national recognition when it was selected as the opening documentary film under the "National Prism" package at the 17th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) in May 2022.

Synopsis

The documentary shows the real-life ecological restoration of the Punshilok forest. It shows the core conservation way known as Meiram Semba (the creation of a fireline). In this process, narrow strips of dry shrubs and grass are cleared around the periphery of the forest using controlled, man-made fire. This perimeter acts as a buffer zone, stopping the spread of unpredictable, dangerous wild summer fire caused by people or seasonal dry woods.

Production

The film was the first directorial project of James Khangenbam. It was made in the Langol hills of Manipur. It used natural, real forest audio to make accurate record of the environment.

Release and festival screenings

In May 2022, the film had its screening as the curtain-raiser for the documentary category at the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF). In August 2022, it competed in the 14th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK). Later that year, it was screened at the Wildlife Vaasa Festival (International Nature Film Festival) in Finland.

On 5 March 2023, the documentary received a theatrical release at the Tanth Cinema Hall in Imphal, Manipur. In April 2024, it was released digitally at Pocket Films on YouTube.

Awards and honours

• 14th Manipur State Film Awards (2022): shown in the Non-Feature Film section.
• MIFF 2022 Selection: formally recognized by the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting under the South Asian Non-Feature curation.

Public response

The film received positive reviews from regional and national critics for its raw, unfiltered look at grassroots activism. Media houses like the Imphal Times commented on the documentary for clearly showing the systemic lack of state-appointed forest guards, and about how individual and community heroism stepped in to safeguard regional biodiversity.
