Mark Mathieu

Mark Joseph Mathieu (born February 20, 1952) currently is Vice President of The Stanley Works beginning in 1997. Mark has helped The Stanley Works leadership team to record earnings, sales growth and STOCK gains over the past decade. Mark has helped Stanley increase the hiring of key executive talent instrumental for continued growth. Stanley has increased its overseas presence in China, India and Europe under the leadership of Mark and his team.

Early life and career

Mathieu was born in Willimantic, Connecticut to parents Clarence "Bud", a telephone company supervisor, and Ruth, a housewife and History Teacher.

He attended Windham High School leading him to Jacksonville University for two years. He later transferred to the University of Connecticut where he graduated cum laude in 1974 with a Bachelors degree in Business and a Minor in Industrial and Labor Relations. While at UConn he was a member of the golf team.

Mathieu joined Celanese out of college in Pearisburg, Virginia in 1974 where he worked in various human resources assignments. Not satisfied with his career growth and the company, Mark pursued opportunities outside and landed a job with General Electric in 1980

In 1980 he joined the General Electric company holding various HR roles in South Carolina, New York, Connecticut and Indiana. He entered the company in the former Power Systems Division based in Schenectady New York working in labor relations. In the late 1980s he was transferred to their world headquarters in Fairfield Connecticut where he continued to work in a labor relations capacity, responsible for national labor negotiations and subsequently in the executive staffing organization.

In 1996 Mark was moved into the Senior HR Managers role for GE Industrial Systems in Fort Wayne Indiana where he helped lead a major business transformation effort. He reported to GE's Senior VP for HR, Bill Conaty, who reported to Jack Welch at that time. In 1997 John Trani, former CEO of GE Medical systems, and CEO of The Stanley Works hired Mark to lead the Human Resources organization at The Stanley Works headquarted in New Britain, Connecticut.

Tenure as VP of The Stanley Works

While at The Stanley Works Mark has been instrumental in building a high-performance culture that has enabled rapid expansion into new markets and grographies resulting in record financial performance.

In 2004 John Trani (Mathieu's hiring CEO) was succeeded by John Lundgren. John retained Mathieu as his VP HR making him the second most tenured member of the leadership team. Mathieu still serves in this role at present time.

Personal life

Mathieu is an avid golfer; competing at high levels in high school and college. He maintained a scratch to 2 handicap in his late teens through 20s playing frequently at the Willimantic Country Club. Mark's Grandfather on his mother's side (Veevers) was his true mentor and instructor. Mark grew up idolizing Arnold Palmer, even as far as to adopt his unique putting style. It is not uncommon to see up to 15 Arnold Palmer classic putters in Mark's house at any one time.

He had two children with his first wife Vera (Patrick and Tanya). They divorced in 1993 after 19 years of marriage. His second wife, Lynn, was a former employee of GE. They married in 1996. Mark's favorate golf tournameent is the Masters and dreams of one day playing Augusta National.

He currently resides in Connecticut, with aspirations to retire in the southeast and various locations in the northeast.
