Marjorie Silverman

Dr. Marjorie Silverman is a Psychologist and former Dean of Barnard College in New York. Her most recent venture is Strategic@50, a membership organization that seeks to change the career landscape for professional women over 50.

Career

Silverman began her career at Barnard College in 1980. In recent positions as Associate Dean of the College (2004-2009), Dean for Student Development (1999-2009), and Adjunct Professor of Psychology (2009-present), she has been instrumental in creating and overseeing a range of programs for students and faculty. Her initiatives include:

  • Restructured Health and Counseling Services, with the addition of the [...] Crisis/Anti-Violence Support Center, the Well-Woman Health Promotion program, the Alcohol and Substance Awareness program, and independent and group counseling, among other resources
  • Saturday Science Seminars, a program to introduce 11th grade girls from the Metropolitan area public and private schools to college-level science and mathematics at Barnard College and The Rockefeller University
  • The Mellon Student Life Grant to cultivate co-curricular programs to foster interaction among students and faculty in settings outside the classroom
  • The Identity, Community, and Belonging Grant, sponsored by the Engelhard Foundation (2005-2009)

Additionally, Silverman has produced and developed a series of documentary films on the multicultural experience at Barnard: AbOUT Face (1995), Indivisible (1996), and Oyeme (1997).

Silverman is an ACTIVE philanthropist, advocating for arts and educational opportunities. She currently sits on the Boards of the George Jackson Academy, where she is Vice-Chairman, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a member of the Advisory Committee on New Initiatives at Young Audiences, and has been influential in developing curricula at the The Lab School at Columbia University and the Horace Mann School, where she was also the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees (1987-2001).

Strategic@50

Strategic@50 is a social business that CREATES opportunities in the global workplace for exceptional professional career women, ages 50+, through its programs and advisory services. The concept was developed to respond to the reality that traditional jobs are contracting for women over 50. Strategic@50 educates, advises and promotes global opportunities for women. The business was co-founded with Donna Redel.

Education

Silverman attended New York University (B.S. 1972; M.A. 1973), Teachers College (Ed.M. 1976), Columbia University (M.Phil. 1979; Ph.D. 1980), and the Ackerman Institute for Family Therapy.
