Marco Aponte
Marco Aponte Moreno (b. October, 26, 1966) is a Venezuelan/French actor and linguist born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela.
Acting career
Aponte studied theater at the HB Studio in New York City from 1997 until 2003. He also studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. In 2001 he founded the theater company Actors of the World with Lance Lattig. In 2002 Aponte and Lattig adapted and translated the play L'Hiver Sous La Table by Roland Topor. The play was produced in 2002 at the New York International Fringe Festival under the name Winter Under the Table. He co-wrote (with Lattig) the play Manhatitlán, which in 2003 also opened at the New York International Fringe Festival. The play is based on Simone Schartz-Bart's play Ton Beau Capitaine. Between 2000 and 2005, Aponte performed for several New York-based theater companies including Pulse Ensemble Theatre, TEBA, Waterloo Bridge Theater, Ollantay, Hudson Exploited Theater Company, Park Theater, Renaissance SW, Gratte Ciel Theatre Company and Galery Players.
In 2005 he was nominated for a New York ACE Latino Critics Award for his performance of Garcin in a production of the play Huis Clos (A Puerta Cerrada) by Jean-Paul Sartre.
He lives in London where he has performed in several short films and at different fringe theatres such as the Questors Theatre, the Blue Elephant Theatre, the Lion and Unicorn Theatre, and Theatro Technis. In 2008 Aponte performed in two productions with the theatre company Act provocateur international: Zolly by South African playwright Niko Luwes and Six Characters in Search of an Author (which he co-directed with Victor Sobchak) by Luigi Pirandello. He originated the role of Michael in the play The Challenging Tide by Stavros Lillitos. The play, directed by George Eugeniou, opened in London in January 2009.
Academic career
Aponte studied foreign languages in Paris, France, where he graduated from the University of Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle in 1993. In 1995 he obtained an MBA from Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, Louisiana. In 2008 he obtained a PhD in Hispanic Linguistics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Since 2003 he has taught languages and linguistic courses in several universities in the United States and the United Kingdom including New York University, The City University of New York, Princeton University, the University of Greenwich, the University of London, and Regent's College.
In 2006, he developed a pilot program at Regent's College in London aimed at motivating students to learn Spanish through writing and producing short films.
He currently teaches at Aston University and conducts research on political discourse analysis and on the use of drama techniques in second language teaching. In January 2009 he published the book 'Metaphors in Hugo Chávez's Political Discourse'.
