Mah-Jong (clothing brand)
Mah-Jong was a design company founded by Helena Henschen, Veronica Nygren och Kristina Torsson 1966 in Stockholm. The company produced soft, simple, functional and class-less garments for every age using own patterns. The goal was to unite design and ideology, make people change through soft and colorful clothing.
The manifest of Mah-Jong
- Having one same model available many years.
- Using materials that are natural.
- Including every age and size.
- Letting clothes remain beautiful.
- Manufacture the clothes in Sweden.
In this manifest there was embedded the protest against The Swift changes of fashion that was said to trick people buying clothes more frequent than needed. There was the revolution towards the fashion that required a "perfect" body to even fit. And finally, the refusing to use cheap labor from the third world and instead support the domestic textile industry in Sweden. This last point contributed to the company going bankrupt in 1976 when domestic manufacturing had turned just too expensive. Today there exist however some reproduction. Add to that many garments still exist in circulation, they are highly durable.
