Mike becomes friendly with Dr. Tricia Sumerbee. Craddock's tries to impress an inspector as the station and the police house is vandalised. The vandalism turns out to be by a young boy who claims a policeman killed his father in a car crash. Vernon and David have a dispute over the house, with Vernon accusing David of stealing items of food and whisky. NOTE: This is the fifth series in history to produce 24 episodes. This is the return of a new series after a 29 week break. 12.03 Million viewers tuned in to watch this episode. The boy who caused damage to police property runs off with his 16-year old girlfriend,who falls ill after drinking contaminated water. Vernon eventually persuades Oscar to try a slot machine in the pub. He says he will pay for the winnings himself. Vernon does not realise the machine has been fixed by a friend of Charley Woods, a rival slot machine king, to pay out every time meaning Oscar enjoys a busy night of trade, eventually Charley Woods foots the bill. Vernon buys some peat from a Lithuanian trawler skipper, with a view to selling it as a coal substitute but it turns out that where there's smoke there is no fire.
