Stuff Asian People Like
Stuff Asian People Like is a satirical blog and book created by Peter T. Nguyen and Nancy T. Nguyen. It explores and satirizes common stereotypes and cultural observations associated with Asian people, particularly Asian Americans. Inspired by the blog Stuff White People Like, the project uses exaggeration and comedic devices to highlight perceived cultural nuances related to food, family, education, social interactions, and other aspects of Asian culture.
While employing stereotypes as a foundation for its humor, Stuff Asian People Like also subtly critiques these very stereotypes by exposing their inherent absurdity. The work aims to be relatable to many Asian individuals by referencing shared experiences and cultural touchstones. It is important to note that Stuff Asian People Like is intended as satire and should not be interpreted literally as a factual representation of Asian culture.
The Ningyo
Wong was an associate producer on the award-winning short The Ningyo (2017).
"Set in 1911, The Ningyo follows a professor who specializes in 'cryptozoology,' the search for mythological creatures. The title stems from a Japanese myth about a fish-like creature known as the ningyo that can curse a person with immortality. When a map leading to one is discovered, it sets off a globe-spanning hunt that takes our protagonist from his university office to a secret cryptozoo and the bottom of the sea. The 27-minute film may take audiences on an incredible voyage, but behind-the-scenes the production was surprisingly humble. Where practical photography was possible, they used it. Everything else was created in 3D using industry-standard software like Maya, Nuke and V-Ray."
