Kiewiet Lengana Pali
Kiewiet Lengana Pali is a South African Mosotho artist, vocal coach, music educator, and mentor known for training award-winning classical and contemporary singers. Based in Pretoria, Pali has taught several students who have gone on to achieve national and international recognition, particularly in classical music performance.
Early life and education
Pali was born in Mamafubedu and attended Mamafubedu Primary School where he joined the school choir under the supervision of Mr. Kolokoto. He later relocated to QwaQwa and attended Bolata Senior Primary School, where he continued his choral involvement under the direction of Mr. Sello Radebe. During this time, Mr. Radebe introduced him to the QwaQwa Sings Adult Choir that was conducted by Mr. Sipho Mbatha, whose dedicated mentorship and rigorous musical training played a significant role in shaping Pali’s development as an opera singer.
Pali subsequently attended Thokwana Makaota School before completing his matriculation at Thalabodiba Senior Secondary School in QwaQwa. After completing his matric, he moved to the Vaal Triangle, where he worked in the construction industry for one year in 2003. During this period, he enrolled at Samelson Business College to study catering. In 2004, he worked at Burger Box Roadhouse in Vereeniging.
In 2006, Pali enrolled at Tshwane University of Technology in the Department of Performing Arts (Vocal Art), where he specialized in opera studies. He obtained a Diploma in Vocal Art Performance in 2008, followed by a BTech in Vocal Art (Pedagogy) in 2009. In 2013, he completed a Bachelor of Music Honours in Performance at the University of Pretoria.
Pali later became a voice teacher and lecturer, mentoring several notable opera singers, including Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha and Nkululeko Masuku.
Career
Pali is known primarily for his work as a vocal coach and music educator. He has taught vocal technique, interpretation, and performance preparation to emerging singers in South Africa. His teaching emphasizes vocal control, musicality, and expressive interpretation. He has been associated with vocal training programmes in Pretoria, including the Vocal Art training environment connected to the Tshwane University of Technology. Several of his students have credited him with providing foundational training that enabled them to pursue advanced studies and professional careers.In 2024 and 2025, Pali was invited by the Eswatini Higher Education Council to serve as a subject-matter specialist, conducting institutional and programme assessments for emerging music colleges, including Africa Ntjilo and the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology’s Department of Music. His commitment to international and cultural exchange is further reflected in his completion of German language studies at the Goethe-Institut, supporting his engagement with the operatic repertoire and traditions of German-speaking countries. According to SAMRO (South African Music Rights Organization), Kiewiet Pali is the first person to have written an opera in Sesotho. Pali currently works at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Pretoria.
