JT McCormick
JT McCormick is an American businessman, author and speaker. Most recently, he served as President of technology company HeadSpring before his current role as President & CEO at Book in a Box.
Early life
McCormick was born in Dayton, Ohio and raised by his mother Anna-Marie McCormick there until the age of nine.
McCormick and his mother moved to Houston for a year before he returned to Dayton at age ten to live with his father. His father being a pimp and a [...] dealer at one point leaving to London for a year, McCormick was often left staying with relatives or girlfriends of his father.
In his book, “I Got There”, McCormick describes the years between ages 10 and 13 as some of the most difficult in his life, dealing with [...] abuse, being homeless and in and out of juvenile detention centers without much structure before moving in with his Uncle Bobby from 13 to 15.
At age 15 McCormick moved to San Antonio to live with his mother for the remainder of high school, which he finished over summer school after the rest of his class had graduated. When he went to pick up his high school diploma, it was given to him by the school's janitor.
Career
McCormick got his first taste of the corporate world in the mailroom at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company in San Antonio, where he worked his way up the ladder for four and a half years.
McCormick then accepted a job at a company running small money loans. While there, McCormick moved to Portland, Oregon to become the company’s Regional Vice President there. Next, McCormick became an account executive at Countrywide and was there until he went to Wachovia to continue working in the mortgage industry until 2009.
McCormick then worked at Insperity in a sales position until joining HeadSpring as employee number 13 and the lowest paid employee, in March 2011 to build their sales team. By 2013 McCormick was promoted to President of HeadSpring. Under McCormick’s leadership, HeadSpring was listed three years in a row as one of the top places to work in Texas.
In March 2016 McCormick became President & CEO of Book in a Box. In his post “I Fired Myself As CEO”, Tucker Max described the choice to replace himself as President & CEO with JT this way: “I’ll sum up what we found: he was even more of a baller than we thought. Everyone I talked to loved him. They told me stories about him that were so amazing they seemed made-up (for example, he put a kid through college that wasn’t his).”
