Joanne Chun
Joanne SungRyung Chun (born November 27, 1998) is a classical flautist.
Life and career
Joanne SungRyung Chun was born in Seoul, South Korea to James Chun and Sonya Kim. She has been studying flute since the age of seven. Chun had her orchestral debut at the age of fourteen, playing the Chaminade Concertino with the London Community Orchestra. Since then, she has performed with ensembles in Canada and internationally. She has worked with conductors such as Len Ingrao, Robert Kennedy, and Linda Wharton. In 2013, she won 3rd place and Honorable Mention at the Alexander Buono International Flute Competition in New York City.
Upon the school board's recommendation (Thames Valley District School Board), Chun has accelerated a grade. Currently, she is studying at London Central Secondary School and will be graduating in June 2015, at the age of 16.
Her performances have been broadcast on local and national radio stations. She was a full-scholarship Recipient at the National Music Camp of Canada where she studied with Julie Ranti, Associate Principle Flute of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Jeffrey Khaner during the summer of 2014.
She was a finalist and winner at the 2013 Ontario Provincial Finals, and a 3rd place winner of the Alexander Buono International Flute Competition. Also, she won the 2013 Young Artist Competition with the London Community Orchestra, which subsequently led to her debut with the orchestra in December 2013.
The teachers with whom she have studied with include Jeffrey Khaner (Philadelphia Orchestra), Mimi Stilman (Curtis Institute of Music), Annelie Metrakos (former Principal Flute at Orchestra London), Kaili Maiments (Principal Flute at Orchestra London), Ingrid Crozman, Sharon Kahan, Susan Hoeppner, and Julie Ranti (Toronto Symphony Orchestra).
As of the 2014~2015 season, she will be Principal Flute with the London Youth Symphony.
