Influence of severe weather on American politics
Every year, severe weather disasters, including tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, winter storms, floods, heat waves, droughts, and other meteorological events affect the United States. Numerous of these disasters have affected American federal, state, and local politics. Some of these influences may lead to new legislation, new research organizations, or new technology, while some may lead to controversies, conspiracy theories, political resignations, or even state or federal investigations, including United States congressional committee investigations.
Severe weather disasters can also influence the outcome of elections, including United States presidential elections, even to the point where Hurricane Sandy was considered the October surprise of the 2012 presidential election and where Hurricane Helene was described as the "flashpoint" for the 2024 presidential election.
